Notes to self

Small things, written down so I remember them.

A kettle that takes its time

March 3

I bought a new kettle last week and it is slower than the old one. I keep forgetting this and come back to the kitchen too early.

There is something to be said for waiting. I stand there and look out of the window and do nothing much at all, which is rare for me these days.

Rearranging the bookshelf, again

March 9

I moved all the books around by colour on Sunday. It looked nice for about a day and then I could not find anything.

By Tuesday they were back in the usual order, author by author. Some lessons I seem to need to learn more than once.

Slow mornings

March 15

The alarm goes off and I ignore it for a while. No one needs me before eight, so I let the room stay dark a little longer.

The best part is the first quiet cup before anyone wakes, when the flat is still and the heating has not yet started to tick. I drink it by the window and plan nothing.

It never lasts long. Still, those few minutes feel like they belong to me and nobody else.

The bus was two minutes early

March 21

The bus came early today and I watched it pull away from halfway down the street. There is no arguing with a bus.

So I walked instead. It was cold but clear, and I got to work only a little late and in a better mood than usual.

A stubborn houseplant

March 28

The plant on my desk drops a leaf whenever I change anything. New pot, a leaf. Move it to a brighter spot, a leaf.

I have decided to stop fussing over it and water it on the same day each week. We are both happier with a routine, I think.
